Mako and Korra ~ The Legend of Korra

YSU! The first two episodes of the new avatar!
It's so long to wait!( But one of the characters I already like

P.S. Unfortunately, I have bad to express my thoughts, using non-native language, so forgive me if that.
When I went and read comments, I was horrified( How was it possible in a simply fanart picture of the cartoon to see such negative? I like Korra. In addition, so few female heroines in good cartoons. I was not going to change something special in her, she a great character, anyway! People, I really just made a mistake, nothing more. I've always been inattentive, from this I have always suffered) Even in my thoughts I did not want to offend someone, it's not in my nature. Do not take it personally. If I offended anyone, I apologize, do not be angry. There is no racism, what are you talking about? At first, these allegations make me smile, because I could not imagine such attacks. But then I was very upset by the fact that my mistake perceived as serious, and so misunderstood(.I was sad and frustrating that I was called who I never was. So do not think anything wrong, people sometimes make mistakes. I apologize for the mistakes that I made. I hope you will understand that I did not want anybody hurt.
But please let's not quarrel in the comments. It was not very nice to see how some people are angry at each other here, speaking to each other nasty things(. It's very sad. Please let's not insult each other, we are all individuals and deserve respectful treatment. Let's be kinder.
Anyway, the Avatar - a good and positive cartoon. Let's just enjoy the excellent quality and the spectacle, where in addition to exciting adventures are many good and worthy ideas

Please excuse me for ranting here, but WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!
Just because somebody made an honest mistake-I don't even know how this mistake can lead to RACISM!!
Nobody ever gets anything done PERFECTLY.In everything, there is a small flaw, and in this picture, that "small flaw",WAS A SIMPLE,UNNOTICED,MISTAKE THAT WE DIDN'T NEED TO EVEN KNOW IN THE FIRST DAMNED PLACE HERE,PEOPLE!LEAVE THIS ARTIST ALONE,PEOPLE!
She just made an honest mistake, and you treat her like she LIKES to torture you!You.People.Sicken.ME.
I'm sorry for raining on your parade,I just don't like artists being mistreated.
This is a great picture, regardless of what those bitches say,and please excuse me for my language. When I'm mad,I tend to cuss a LOT.

She is the most lovely in your style, still remarkably strong and fierce yet very elegant and feminine

And, your additional comment just struck me. I am so sorry that you have had to endure all these insults! Moving words that I wish others would abide to! Let's be kinder to one another

I'm also here thanks to a very offensive tumblr-post and would like to say that the picture looks great and it's prefectly human to make mistakes. Korras Skin-tone is too light and Makos Eyebrows aren't right. So what? Mistakes happen and I highly doubt that you would change the skin-tone, because of your personal preferences.
You said English is not your native language? I guess you're from somewhere else then. I often get the feeling that racism is a very touchy subject in America and some tend to jump into being offended very fast due to reasons others might find completely fine and not offensive at all. Please don't be sad, everything is fine and your art looks great. :)

I found this picture through a very rude and drawn-out-to-hell post on Tumblr. I love the picture and your drawing style.
The skintone thing doesn't really bother me. In fact, I've seen it happen in fan art pretty often.
If this has crossed your mind at all, please don't consider deleting this picture or deactivating your account because of the damn jerks. You're awesome.

An artistic decision is not at attack against race. To call someone racist because they drew a character differently is false. Racism is the act of "hatred or intolerance of another race or other races." Which is typically racial stereotyping, slander, and unfounded prejudiced. The artist has displayed NONE of that here. So to those calling her out and playing the racism card: Grow up and learn what it actually means to be racist.

I think this art is beautifully done. The shading is gorgeous and I love the expressions <3
mewmewramazika Featured By Owner Jun 19, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
What's the BIG deal about this picture? Korra isn't even white, she's NOT black either (her eyes are BLUE)! She NATIVE AMERICAN! That's why her skin is BROWN and she comes from a "tribe", yes, the artist colored her light. Who the fuck cares? I think think this picture is beautiful.
Korra's skin is a tan brown, in some images Korra looks lighter than she does all the time.
Have you idiots looked through the REST of her gallery? In all the other images Korra is a brown shade. This was obviously a coloring mistake.

I just started watching LoK and love it, eventho the I already know the whole plot thanks to tumblr LOL.

Your style is great, and this artwork is gorgeous. I love the idea

I simply did not see any mistake at first and was SHOCKED at the comments. Don't let those bother you. I can understand that it is a possible mistake, seeing that I did not even recognize it at first, and I'm Asian (so no bs about white-washing whatsoever!). Sometimes, psychologically proven, your memory is incomplete. So it is natural to make a mistake such as this.

The point is: JUST IGNORE those bafflings. Keep up your good work!
Squight Featured By Owner Jun 18, 2012
You want people to stop calling you out on your racism? There's really only one way to fix it, and guess what, a rambling "that wasn't my intention!" excuse isn't it.

Admit you messed up, acknowledge the hurt that mistake made, and CORRECT THE DRAWING.

That's right. Edit it. Use a reference picture. Make her skin the right color. It's human decency, not rocket science.
Ryu-Umi Featured By Owner Jun 20, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It's posts like these that make me truly sickened by how inconsiderately cruel people can be today. Why do people pay so much unnecessary attention to a simple unintentional mistake of the skin tone? I for one did not even notice that until I read the description because truthfully, there are many more drawings that I have seen that haven't exactly gotten the skin tone down spot-on. I know my own drawing of Korra has an incorrect color palette for the skin tone, but I know I tried my best. This artist, I'm sure, was probably the same. Why is it that the other drawings of Korra with the incorrect skin tone does not get as much bashing and hate like this one? Is it because this artist has more publicity and popularity? Is it because other artists wish for the downfall of this artist who is at a much higher level than many others? It's truly pitiful to watch people like you speak in such a rude manner.

It's quite laughable to see how you speak so lightly about fixing the picture and changing her skin tone. What if she merged all of the layers together already and saved it that way or deleted the file some time after posting? I know I always do that, and I know that I am unable to go back to fix something afterwards.

Think before you comment. At least, understand the artist's situation before rushing in to attack them. Like you said, it's human decency, not rocket science.
Squight Featured By Owner Jun 23, 2012
I was actually trying quite hard not to be cruel. I never attack artists, I never insult talent. I only ever point out that characters have been portrayed as lighter than they are.

That there are many other drawings out there that "haven't exactly gotten the skin tone down spot-on" is WHY I'm speaking out against it (and let's be real here: how many drawings have you seen where Korra was too DARK?)

If you drew a fanart of Korra that is too light, I would really appreciate it if you would correct it. It's the right thing to do.

If this piece is being "singled out" more than others, it's probably BECAUSE the piece has more publicity and popularity, because it has gotten distributed in more ways and has come to the attention of more people. Some of whom dislike seeing brown characters drawn lighter than they are.

I've seen fanart where characters have been drawn too light corrected by people who aren't even the original artist, so it doesn't seem like it should be an insurmountable obstacle. The artist seems to care a lot about what people think of them, I'm trying to offer ways to make reparations. If it truly is impossible to correct the artwork, perhaps the artist could make another piece, this time using references for Korra's skin-tone.

I think the people who are angered by this piece have legitimate grievances and I think it would be an important, maybe even necessary, gesture of good-will.

Wow. You have many good points that I have never even taken the time to think about. Sorry for being so rash and attacking you immediately about the topic!
Squight Featured By Owner Jun 23, 2012
Don't worry about it. I just noticed that the artist corrected the piece so everything is peachy now.

I wouldn't consider myself an expert on this stuff at all... if you want more information about whitewashed fanart and why it's important, check out , especially the FAQ. I'm not a POC so I feel weird having me be your only source for this stuff.

There is always a kinder way of saying things. You can't deny that. If you are kinder when talking to others, people will listen to you more, and not get so mad. It may have been the truth, but that doesn't give you the right to be so rude.

I think you did a good job! If you ever want to avoid mistakes in making a character look a lighter shade than they are, there are some lighting tutorials. Don't feel sad about it! A lot of people have made a mistake when it comes to lighting and Korra--sadly, people tend to be rude. Either way, I love this! c:

I wish people would stop saying this artist is racist. Keep the piece of art, Purple-Meow, you are entitled to draw however you want. To fight over that the artist didn't make her skin dark is childish. I, myself, tried to make a skin color darker without messing up or making it look bad and its really hard. Oh before I am excused of being a racist too, my partner is a different race than I am, (so as the trolls say, COME AT ME BRO) if anyone has any problems. I am disappointed to see so many hateful comments about a wonderful piece of artwork just because of a simple mistake or a preference for the tone of the whole piece. I am sure none of YOU people would like it if someone went on your artwork and say you are a racist for not coloring someone in a certain color. So please dA, see beyond color and race and enjoy and post art like this site is suppose to. And I always thought art doesn't have a set of rules you should follow, I always thought it came from your heart and your mind, not what society tells you how it should be done. Maybe I need a reality check.

This is depressing, people just can’t stand seeing a dark skinned main character so they have to make her white. How sad. I mean what is the problem with tan folk anyways, and dont tell me this is a mistake because im pretty sure in your gallery there is only light skinned females. *sigh*
ApriltheAsian Featured By Owner May 1, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
there's a ton of people downing on this pic just because Korra's skin is a few shades to light, and some people are even calling this artist racist and a lot of other things. Don't jump to conclusions, maybe it was just an honest mistake. You never know. I for one, love the picture. The pose is just pure genius. :)
SwiftMemory Featured By Owner May 1, 2012
*Angry Sigh* You do relize that Korra has BROWN skin right????? Not white, not tan, etc. Brown.
zibbyamala Featured By Owner Apr 30, 2012
Why is she so light?...really? I thought we were past crap like this? It's the 21st century and some people (like you) just can't seem to fathom the fact that NOT ALL people have light skin, and if they're darker skinned, well, "we just gotta fix that and make then light", right? I'm actually ashamed of this picture, and ashamed of you. Korra is absolutely BEAUTIFUL in the cartoon, but she's too dark, isn't she?

What really bothers me is that you don't even ACT like anything's wrong. In your description, you don't even acknowledge the fact that you white washed a character. Making her look like a completely different race (you're race, I'm sure) is just all in well? Hey, I bet you were a fan of the casting in the Last Airbender as well. Take those racist goggles off and wake up. YES, I'm calling you racist. That's the only reason you'd make her so light. It's a race problem, you didn't run out of brown coloring or anything, right?

I WANT you to reply to this comment, so I can prove to you how ignorant you are. By the way, this picture looks more like Edward and Bella than Mako and Korra.
Purple-Meow Featured By Owner May 3, 2012
I will answer just for you) Your comment was written just two days ago, and you are angry that I can not answer you. Some people just do not have time to go once more to the Internet. This does not mean that someone is ignoring you. Personally, I read you the first time right now)
Unfortunately, you have mistakenly understood my intentions. More precisely, I had no intentions. I do not think there is still racism. I do not understand when someone accused of this. I do not come to mind to blame the Germans, that they once did to the Jews, my nation. Those times are long gone prejudice. It was a long time ago. I think in the world today there is only ignorance and misconception. Once I was denied a job I really wanted to. The employers want the man, because they needed was a man, not a girl. But I'm not going to shout about feminism)). I'm just not lucky enough or I'm not trying to. What am I saying this? I just do not like to accuse someone of something, I prefer to raise my self-esteem and not be angry for nothing.
I do not think anyone hurt. In all of these comments, I first heard the expression "whitewashing", even at first did not understand what people are saying. If you're really hurt, then I apologize. I do not like being misunderstood. I love to find a common language with people. Do not think anything bad. I just do a lot of yawning and make mistakes in my work)) You took it so hard and strong that it seems to me that this is really important and very upset to you. Sorry, I did not want to hurt your feelings. Do not think badly of me, I hope you understand my mistake and do not feel like the other, unpleasant(
PrincessNia Featured By Owner Apr 29, 2012
This is a cute picture, but seriously, who is the girl? She's like a parody of Korra, not only whitewashed, but with her facial features just completely disregarded for the typical *omg kawaii* anime face. Mako has personality in his eyes, but your Korra is just vapid emptiness. I'm sure you love her character, and if you do, you'll fix this. If not, I'm sorry, but you've earned the flames you're getting.
